Previously on World Wide Ricks: Kit and Kyle had risked life and limb by venturing into the interior of the Balkan peninsula, and had just crossed Bosnia after several days…

  • With winter fast approaching here are some memories of previous days
Leaving lake zorkul, we passed from the relatively dry to the extremely dry.

  • When things go wrong in the steppe, you can feel so exposed and vulnerable to whatever the sky brews up. The BMW spent a lot of time on its side thanks to a large, sharp rock putting a gash in the tire during an off-road excursion. While it held most of the time, it would occasionally lead to a flat tire. Getting a flat in the afternoon really put our tire changing skills to the test. Dark clouds would often fill the horizon out of nowhere. On this day near Ider, we were in the direct path of a large and very active storm. With the tube patched, lightning would strike the ridge behind us while we were in the middle of a large, empty valley. It was time to move. We never drove so fast, narrowly escaping the barrage of lightning and hail, dodging the worst of the storm. Later, we would get to watch more of the Mongolian light show from the comfort of our ridgetop camp

  • @vandersteeze doesn't get pitted in Mongolia, instead he goes full submarine mode. River crossings were frequent. Most were simple fords. Others, like outside of Zag, were rather deep and got verrrry close to the intake. Best thing to do is crank the throttle and send it!

  • The region of Ulaagchiin Khar Lake presents a collision of Mongol enviroments: lush steppe clashed with Gobi-esque sands. It makes for vibrant views of green, brown, yellow, red and blues. It also makes for one hell of a fun motorcycle drive as each surface gives way to another, over and over again. There is never a dull moment in western Mongoloa

  • Pick a track, any track. When cruising through much of Mongolia, a favored dirt track will eventually go into disarray. Washboards form and mud pits swamp sections. With wide open steppe, people simply run parrarel, establishing a new, better track. This process repeats itself over the years (or days) and a dizzying maze of tracks may appear. Choosing the "good" track is often a roll of the dice, but super fun driving is guaranteed

  • The sands of Mongolia... with the right tools, it's a thrill to drive! A gap in the mountains allows a river of sand dunes to pour into Ulaagchiin Lake, which makes for an absolutely beautiful and epic playground. At camp, Grant takes the blueberry for a whirl on the sea of dunes. Moto bliss

Ricking it across the world

Departing Seattle June 2017 for an indefinite length of time, the ricks will be providing dry commentary as we rick across the globe on motorcycles. If you get offended easily, you're probably not a rick, but we welcome non-ricks, semi-ricks, vicarious ricks, and all other forms of ricks. Enjoy the journey <3 :) :) :)
